Why were Sai Baba's followers so confused about whether he had actually died?

Decades earlier, Baba had once drawn his life force into the crown of his head, appearing completely lifeless for three full days. During that time, his followers believed he was dead and began discussing his final rites. However, he suddenly returned to his body, shocking everyone. Because of this incredible precedent, when his breath actually ceased on Vijayadashami, his devotees were understandably doubtful. The text explains that everyone became uncertain whether it was another deep trance, or Samadhi, or if it was actual death, making the initial 26 hours a period of intense deliberation.
