Why were Baba's followers so confused about whether he was truly dead or just in a trance?

The confusion among Sai Baba's followers stemmed from a specific historical event. According to Chapter 44, when Baba's breath left His body, everyone became doubtful whether it was a final death or a state of Samadhi (trance). This doubt was rooted in a past incident from 32 years prior when Baba had drawn his life force into the crown of his head and appeared dead for three full days. Just as people were preparing for final rites back then, he suddenly returned to his body. Because of this previous experience, when he passed away for the final time, his followers were hesitant and deliberated for twenty-six hours, unsure if he might rise again.
