Mamlatdar Dev was suspicious because the Sanyasi returned much earlier than anticipated. Chapter 40 recounts that Dev had specifically told the Sanyasi to come back after two or four months. When the Sanyasi showed up in a tonga only about a month later, Dev felt doubtful and wondered if the man had forgotten their previous conversation. The Sanyasi's request was also completely different. Instead of asking for donations for his cow protection cause, he explicitly stated, "I haven't come for money; today we want a meal." He also informed Dev that he had two companions with him, shifting the nature of his visit from fundraising to seeking hospitality.
Why was Mamlatdar Dev suspicious when the Sanyasi returned to Dahanu, and what was different about the Sanyasi's request this second time?
