Why was Mamlatdar Dev so confused and disappointed after the Sanyasi's visit?

Mamlatdar Dev was left feeling doubtful and confused because he believed Sai Baba had promised to visit him, and he suspected the Sanyasi and his two companions might have been Baba in disguise. However, as Chapter 40 describes, a "veil of Maya" prevented him from being certain. He had anticipated a clear, profound experience but instead was left with ambiguity. This lack of definitive recognition caused him great disappointment. In a letter to his friend Jog, Dev lamented what he felt was a deception, questioning why he waited with such effort only to be left with doubt instead of the spiritual experience he had hoped for.
