Why was Mamlatdar Dev confused and doubtful after the Sanyasi and his companions left his house?

Mamlatdar Dev was confused because he had invited Sai Baba to his home for an Udyapan ceremony, but the experience was not what he expected. As described in Chapter 40, a Sanyasi whom he had previously turned away for a donation returned with two companions, not for money, but for a meal. Although Dev hosted them with full honors, a "veil of Maya" prevented him from recognizing them as Baba and his companions. The text states that even after serving three uninvited guests in person, "Dev still remained doubtful in his mind and sought Jog's testimony." His confusion was so profound that he wrote a letter to Jog questioning why Baba would "deceive" him and expressing disappointment that the promised visit turned out so ambiguously.
