Staying in the Chavadi was an immense hardship for Amir Shakkar due to its terrible state, which was a test of his faith. Chapter 22 provides a vivid description of the place. It was an old, dilapidated building where lizards, house lizards, and poisonous scorpions lived freely. The text mentions that garbage was piled in the back, there were seventeen knee-deep holes, and the ground was uneven and damp. To make matters worse, lepers also stayed there, and dogs would eat leftovers on the premises, creating a miserable and unhygienic environment that the text says even a dog would not endure.
Why was it such a big deal for Amir to stay in the Chavadi? What were the conditions actually like there?
