Why was Dev suspicious when the Sanyasi returned to Dahanu much earlier than advised?

Dev's suspicion was rooted in the Sanyasi's premature return. Dev had explicitly told the Sanyasi that the current time was unfavorable for a new donation drive and had instructed him to come back after two to four months. However, as Chapter 40 recounts, the Sanyasi reappeared in Dahanu after only about a month had passed. Seeing him alight from a tonga, Dev felt doubtful and questioned his son, wondering, "It hasn't even been a full month, why has he come here already? Did he forget what was said earlier?" This early return contradicted the clear instructions given, causing Dev to question the Sanyasi's motives or memory.
