The texts clarify that devotion and knowledge are deeply interconnected. Chapter 50 states that the mind is soiled by ignorance (Avidya), and cleansing it cannot happen without devotion to God. Without this devotion, true knowledge cannot be born; bhajan and worship are otherwise meaningless. The process is likened to applying a special collyrium (Anjan) to the eyes of one born feet-first, allowing them to see hidden wealth. Similarly, as Chapter 50 explains, when one resorts to devotion, ignorance is removed, and knowledge dawns. Therefore, devotion is presented as the foundational step that purifies the mind, making it possible for the light of Brahman-knowledge to shine through.
Why is devotion considered necessary for gaining knowledge? Aren't they separate paths?
