Why is a person's life considered 'in vain' without patience, even if they are a great scholar or person of virtue?

📖 Chapter 19

The teachings in Chapter 19 assert that a human being without patience is in a 'pitiable state' and that their life is 'in vain,' regardless of their scholarly achievements or virtuous character. This is because patience is the fundamental strength and courage that a Guru expects from a disciple. The text uses the analogy of a gem and a stone being polished on a whetstone; both undergo the same process, but only the gem becomes a brilliant jewel. Similarly, without the inherent quality of patience, a person cannot be truly refined by the Guru's guidance, remaining like a stone that cannot gain the luster of a gem. Patience is the key that unlocks spiritual transformation.
