Why did the narrator initially believe that it was pointless to seek out a Guru?

๐Ÿ“– Chapter 2

The narrator initially concluded that seeking a Guru was pointless because he witnessed an event that seemed to prove their ineffectiveness against fate. In Chapter 2, it is described that a close friend's only son died suddenly, despite the fact that the child's grandfather, a Guru, was present and tried to intervene. Seeing this, the narrator felt that if a Guru could not prevent such a tragedy, then their power was limited. He reasoned that "Every living being is governed by the system of Karma" and that if one's destiny is fixed, then there is no advantage in running after a Guru. This led him to believe one should simply experience whatever joy or difficulty comes by chance, making a spiritual quest seem unnecessary.
