Why did the Mamlatdar Dev feel suspicious when he saw the Sanyasi return to Dahanu?

The Mamlatdar Dev felt suspicious because the Sanyasi returned much earlier than expected. During their first meeting, Dev had explicitly told the Sanyasi that another fundraising effort was underway and that he should come back after two to four months. However, as noted in Chapter 40, the Sanyasi was seen alighting from a tonga in Dahanu only about a month later. This premature return caused Dev to feel doubtful in his heart. He wondered to his son why the Sanyasi had come back so soon and questioned whether the man had forgotten what he had been told, which was the root of his suspicion.
