According to the narrative in Chapter 4, Sai Baba told Bhagwantrao Kshirsagar he was being kept hungry because Bhagwantrao had neglected his late father's traditions. His father, whom Baba called a friend, was a devout worshipper of Vitthal. After his passing, Bhagwantrao stopped the worship, the food offerings (Naivedya) to the household idol of Vitthal, and even skipped the annual Shraddha (death anniversary) rites. Baba, identifying with Vitthal and as a friend to the deceased, felt this neglect personally. He stated, "He never offers food (Naivedya); he keeps me hungry too. He keeps Vitthal hungry too." Baba explained that he had drawn Bhagwantrao to Shirdi specifically to remind him of these duties and guide him back to the path of worship.
