Why did Dev, the Mamlatdar, become suspicious when the Sanyasi returned to Dahanu?

Dev became suspicious because the Sanyasi returned to Dahanu much earlier than he had been advised. As recounted in Chapter 40, Dev had told the Sanyasi to come back after two to four months to seek donations. However, the Sanyasi was seen arriving in a tonga only about a month later. Seeing him alight from the tonga, Dev felt doubtful and wondered why he had come back so soon, questioning if the Sanyasi had forgotten what he had been told previously. This premature return was the primary reason for Dev's suspicion.
