When the Sanyasi first approached Dev for a collection, Dev had to refuse because the timing was not favorable. The narrative in Chapter 40 explains that another collection was already in progress in the town. This other fund was being organized by two prominent individuals: Raosaheb Narottam Sheti, who was known for his compassion, and the Nagarseth. Dev reasoned that with this major collection already underway, there was no room for another. He therefore advised the Sanyasi to return to the town after two to four months, when circumstances might be more favorable for his cause.
Why did Dev initially refuse to give a donation to the Sanyasi?
