Dev felt deceived because he was expecting Sai Baba to attend his Udyapan feast in a recognizable form, but he failed to see Him there. As recounted in Chapter 40, Dev had invited Baba with great love and received a promise that He would come. However, when Baba arrived in the guise of a Sanyasi with two companions, Dev did not recognize Him. This failure of perception led Dev to believe the promise was broken, causing him great disappointment. He was so distraught that he wrote a letter to Jog, complaining, "How is it that Baba deceived me? What should I say about His words?" Dev's expectation of a direct, obvious appearance created a "veil of Maya," making him feel that Baba had turned out to be otherwise.
Why did Dev feel that Sai Baba had deceived him regarding the Udyapan ceremony?
