Why did Dev fail to recognize Sai Baba when he appeared as a Sanyasi at the Udyapan feast?

📖 Chapter 40

According to the details in Chapter 40, Dev's failure to recognize Sai Baba was due to a pre-existing context that created a delusion. The Sanyasi who appeared at the feast had previously visited Dev to collect funds for cow protection. This initial meeting happened before Dev had even extended the Udyapan invitation to Baba. Consequently, when the same Sanyasi returned, Dev's mind framed him as a guest who had come for his own purposes, not as Baba in disguise. Dev later realized his error, lamenting that he forgot to pay attention to Baba's specific words: "When I come for the meal, two others will come with me." This oversight, combined with the previous encounter, prevented him from seeing through the Sanyasi's guise.
