Why did Baba believe that spiritual pursuits were futile on an empty stomach? Can you explain his reasoning?

📖 Chapter 32

Sai Baba believed that spiritual progress was impossible on an empty stomach because physical well-being is the foundation for mental and spiritual focus. Chapter 32 details his reasoning, explaining that when one is overcome by hunger, the senses become wretched and weak. He questioned how the eyes could see God, how the tongue could describe His glory, or how the ears could hear His praise without the 'moistness of food in the belly.' In essence, all our senses require strength to function, and this strength comes from food. If the senses become weak from a lack of nourishment, they lose their capacity for spirituality. Therefore, Baba taught that true devotion to God can only happen when the body is adequately, but moderately, nourished.
