Upon his arrival in Shirdi, Sai Baba was first welcomed by Mhalasapati. As described in Chapter 0, Mhalasapati then introduced Baba to his companions, Kashiram Shimpi and Appa Jagle. These three men became his earliest and most total devotees. It was their practice to serve and provide hospitality for saints, Gosavis, Bairagis, and Fakirs who visited the busy village. Kashiram, in particular, served Maharaj with his body, mind, and wealth, taking a vow to provide chillum, tobacco, firewood for the Dhuni, and any money that was needed for Baba's care.
