Sai Baba's first devotees in Shirdi were Mhalasapati, Kashiram Shimpi, and Appa Jagle. As Chapter 0 explains, Mhalasapati, a goldsmith, was the first to meet Maharaj and introduced him to his companions, Kashiram and Appa. These three men had a practice of serving and looking after saints, Gosavis, Bairagis, and Fakirs who frequently came to the busy village of Shirdi. They would provide hospitality according to their capacity, and upon meeting Maharaj, all three became his total devotees.
