According to Chapter 31, Vijayananda was a sannyasi from Madras who was on an enthusiastic journey to Mansarovar. Hearing of Sai Baba's fame, he decided to stop in Shirdi for darshan. After becoming dejected by the difficult travel details provided by Swami Somdevji, he finally took darshan of Baba. However, his initial interaction was perplexing. The chapter states that Baba's disposition was disturbed, and He told the assembly to send the sannyasi away, stating there was 'no companionship for work,' which left the newcomer distressed and watching the service from his seat.
