Kashiram was a devotee of Sai Maharaj who was attacked by thieves. As Chapter 0 recounts, the thieves were after a small bundle he carried, which they thought held treasure but in reality only contained powdered sugar for feeding ants, a practice advised by a saint named Janakidas Baba. Despite being outnumbered, Kashiram fought back bravely, killing two thieves with a dropped sword before a third struck him in the head with an axe. He was left unconscious and presumed dead. However, he survived the ordeal, a fact attributed to Sai Maharaj's divine intervention, as Maharaj was seen in a state of great agitation in Shirdi at the exact time of the attack.
