Sai Baba himself appeared at B.V. Dev's home in the guise of a Sanyasi. This first appearance was before the meal, and it made Dev fearful that the visitor had come to ask for money. Baba, perceiving this, reassured him. Chapter 40 quotes Baba later explaining this event: "Before the time for the meal, once before, alone and at leisure—do you not remember the Sanyasi's guise? The first entry was in that manner." This visit was a prelude to him returning later with two others for the actual meal.
