Before embarking on the procession to the Chavadi, Sai Baba performed a consistent and specific ritual. As Chapter 37 recounts, after getting ready with His usual kafni, short stick (satka), and pipe (chilim), Baba would proceed to a spot near the wall where a bundle of firewood was kept. There, He would move His right big toe at that spot for a moment. Immediately following this, He would personally wave His right hand over the burning flame present there, extinguishing it himself. Only after completing this sequence of actions would Sai Baba set out for the Chavadi, signaling the start of the grand procession.
