What were Annasaheb's original views on having a Guru, and what changed his mind?

Initially, Annasaheb had no devotion or love for the Guru. As described in Chapter 0, he used to think that the practice of 'making a Guru' was a fraud and argued there was no need for one, taking great pride in his own doership and abilities. However, his entire perspective was shattered upon meeting Sai Baba. The moment their eyes met, an internal spiritual witness was voiced, which completely broke his pride. He then became fully convinced that there is no way to cross the ocean of life without the guidance of a Sadguru. This profound transformation was the direct result of Baba's grace.
