Devotees had a practice of bringing books to Sai Baba with a specific desire in mind. As described in Chapter 27, when a desire to read a particular book arose, they would first offer it into Baba's hands. The purpose was to receive it back from him as a blessed object, or 'prasad'. It was believed that reading a book sanctified by Baba's touch would lead to the acquisition of merit and supreme welfare. Devotees brought various texts, including Santaleelamrut, Bhaktaleelamrut, and Viveksindhu.
