The building that became the Samadhi Mandir was a mansion, or wada, constructed by Bapusaheb Buti. According to Chapter 39, the original plan was to convert its central hall into a temple for Murlidhar, an image of Krishna. Bapusaheb wanted to break the side walls and install a throne for the deity, but he would not proceed without his Guru's permission. After Madhavrao presented the plan, Sai Baba joyfully gave his consent, allowing the project to begin.
