What was the origin of the enmity between Veerabhadrappa and Basappa that led them to be reborn as a snake and a frog?

📖 Chapter 47

The story in Chapter 47 begins to explain the root of the conflict between Veerabhadrappa and Basappa. The tale starts with a project to renovate an old temple of Mahadeva for which a large subscription was raised. A wealthy man, later reborn as the snake Veerabhadrappa, was appointed as the manager. However, he was "very stingy by nature" and managed the funds in a way that would cost him nothing personally. He spent all the collected money but left the work half-done, refusing to contribute a single penny from his own pocket. This mismanagement and greed laid the foundation for the deep-seated enmity that followed him into his next life.
