Sai Baba's routine for the Chavadi procession was consistent and full of symbolic actions. According to Chapter 37, Baba would sleep at the Chavadi every other day. On those nights, He would wait in the Masjid until Tatya Patil arrived. Tatya would affectionately help Baba up, and Baba, wearing His usual kafni, would have a golden-bordered shawl placed over Him by Tatya. Before leaving, Baba would go to a spot where firewood was kept, move His right big toe there for a moment, and then wave His hand over the burning flame to extinguish it personally before setting out.
