The small bundle that the thieves presumed held treasure actually contained only powdered sugar. According to the account in Chapter 0, this bundle was exceptionally dear to Kashiram due to spiritual advice he had received. A saint named Janakidas Baba had once advised him to feed sugar to ants, and Kashiram had been carrying the sugar for this purpose ever since. Because of this sentimental and spiritual value, he decided that "whatever happened, he would not let it go," which prompted him to fight back fiercely against the robbers when they tried to take it from him.
