What was Dev's reaction when he finally learned that he had failed to recognize Sai Baba at his own feast?

📖 Chapter 40

Upon learning the truth from a letter sent by his friend Jog, Dev was overcome with a mixture of powerful emotions. Chapter 40 describes how his eyes "overflowed with a surge of love." He immediately felt deep regret and shame for his ignorance, exclaiming, "Shame, shame! I blamed Sai in vain!" He felt very dejected in his mind for having doubted Baba and for the pride of his own knowledge that had blinded him. He reflected on how he could have missed the clear signs, ultimately concluding that his own delusion, caused by the Sanyasi's previous visit for fundraising, had prevented him from seeing the divine truth that was right in front of him.
