What was Cholkar's personal struggle and the vow he made to Sai Baba?

In the midst of these difficulties, he made a vow to Sai Baba. This vow involved a personal sacrifice: he would treat sugar as an inedible substance and completely avoid it until he was able to fulfill his promise to visit Shirdi.
