Before departing for the Chavadi, Sai Baba followed a distinct ritual. After Tatya Patil helped Him up and placed a golden-bordered shawl over Him, Baba would approach a wall where a bundle of firewood was kept. According to Chapter 37, He would move His right big toe at that spot for a moment. Immediately after, He would personally wave His right hand over the burning flame that was there, extinguishing it completely. Only after performing this act would Sai Baba set out from the Masjid to begin the procession.
