The boy's uncle was himself a degree-holding doctor, and he, along with his physician friends and expert surgeons, tried various treatments to no avail. The text specifies that "All native and foreign treatments were tried; all efforts were exhausted. Even surgery was attempted, but nothing succeeded." After this complete failure of the medical field, the family's relatives suggested turning to spiritual means, and they pursued worship of deities and their family god. However, these efforts also seemed to provide no help.
