During the fight, Kashiram killed two thieves with a dropped sword but was then struck in the head with an axe and left for dead. The narrative in Chapter 0 explains that while this was happening, Sai Baba, who was far away in Shirdi, began shouting, swearing, and showing great agitation. Onlookers understood this meant he was remotely protecting a devotee from grave danger, which is exactly what happened as Kashiram ultimately survived.
