According to Chapter 39 of the Sai Satcharitra, Sai Baba first appeared in the Nizam State under a mango tree. It was there he was discovered by a man named Chand Patil, who had lost his horse. Sai Baba helped him find his horse and even smoked a chillum with him. Sometime later, a wedding was arranged for Chand Patil's nephew with a bride from Shirdi. Sai Baba accompanied the wedding party from Dhupkheda to Shirdi. The chapter mentions that Chand Patil was the first to find this 'treasure' (Sai), and through him, others were able to receive Sai's darshan. This is how Sai unexpectedly arrived in the village.
