What is the story of Bhagwantrao Kshirsagar, and why did Sai Baba say he was being kept hungry?

📖 Chapter 4

The story of Bhagwantrao Kshirsagar illustrates Sai Baba's respect for traditional worship. As narrated in Chapter 4, Bhagwantrao's father was a great devotee of Vitthal and a friend of Baba's. After his father's passing, Bhagwantrao neglected the family traditions; he stopped the daily worship and food offerings (Naivedya) to the household Vitthal idol and even skipped performing the annual Shraddha, or death anniversary rites. When Bhagwantrao came to Shirdi, Baba, who considered his father a friend, told him, "He never offers food (Naivedya); he keeps me hungry too. He keeps Vitthal hungry too, that’s why I brought him to Shirdi." Baba's purpose was to remind Bhagwantrao of his duties and guide him back to the path of devotion and ancestral respect.
