What is the significance of detachment and finding a Guru on the spiritual path?

Detachment is presented as a paramount virtue. According to Chapter 17, among the six divine attributes of the Lord, 'Detachment' is the first and belongs only to the greatly fortunate. It is born from a pure heart, which is achieved through prescribed actions. The role of a Guru is also critical. The text advises that by renouncing the desire for the fruits of action and concentrating the mind, one should take refuge in a Guru with singleness of purpose. When a devotee does this, the Sadguru takes them under his protection. Ultimately, Chapter 17 states that God gives detachment to the one with whom He is pleased, joining them with discrimination to guide them across the ocean of existence.
