Upon his arrival in Shirdi, the sannyasi Vijayananda had a chance meeting with Swami Somdevji of Haridwar. The Swami's description of the arduous 500-mile journey to Mansarovar, with its snow and other hardships, left Vijayananda feeling dejected and worried. As described in Chapter 31, he then went for Sai Baba's darshan, which initially made his mind "very pleased." However, the situation took a strange turn when Baba's disposition suddenly changed. Sai Baba told the assembled devotees to "send away this sannyasi," stating there was "no companionship for work." Being new and unaware of Baba's ways, this unexpected reaction caused the sannyasi to become distressed.
