What happened when Kashiram was attacked by thieves, and how did he survive?

When Kashiram was attacked by thieves who wanted a bundle he was carrying, he fought back bravely. The bundle, which he protected because it contained powdered sugar for ants as advised by a saint, was mistaken for treasure. As described in Chapter 0, Kashiram managed to kill two thieves with a dropped sword before being struck with an axe and left for dead. However, he was not dead. He later regained consciousness and, having full faith in Maharaj, insisted on being taken to Shirdi instead of a hospital. There, by Maharaj's grace, he recovered.
