What finally motivated the family to take the sick child to Shirdi, and what was their understanding of Sai Baba's abilities?

According to Chapter 34, the family of the boy with the bone-cyst turned to Sai Baba as a last resort after all medical treatments had failed. When remedies reached their limit, relatives suggested seeking help from deities. They eventually heard of a famous Avaliya (saint) in Shirdi, Sai Maharaj. The family heard that this great saint could heal diseases merely with his sight and that if he applied Udi with his own hand, even incurable diseases would perish. Believing this was their final option to avert the calamity, they decided to go and bow at his feet, hoping this last resort would work.
