What does the story of Dr. Pillay teach us about suffering and past actions?

📖 Chapter 34

The story of Dr. Pillay, as recounted in Chapter 34, serves as a powerful illustration of the concept of Prarabdha, or the inescapable fruits of past actions. Dr. Pillay, despite living a pure life, endured immense suffering from a guinea-worm affliction. In his despair, he acknowledged the principle himself, stating, "There is no escape without suffering; one has to take another birth. But the fruits of past actions (Prarabdha) never fail." Sai Baba's response to his plea for death reinforces this teaching. Instead of magically erasing the suffering, Baba offered to share the karmic burden, demonstrating that while consequences must be faced, a Guru's grace can alter the duration and intensity of the suffering, making it bearable.
