The teachings emphasize the critical importance of first understanding the nature of ignorance (Avidya). Chapter 50 explains that you must 'know ignorance first,' because only when its wisdom and its exposition occur can the destruction of its bondage happen. The text compares this to separating stones from rice before cooking; one must purely pick out and discard ignorance. Paradoxically, the 'ghee of ignorance' is necessary, as it is the very fuel that, when offered as an oblation in the fire of the knowledge-sacrifice (Jnana-yajna), allows the fire of true knowledge to manifest. This fire then burns away the illusion of difference between the soul and God.
What does the scripture say about understanding ignorance? Why is it important to know ignorance first?
