What does Chapter 17 say about the true purpose of human life and the obstacles one faces on the spiritual path?

📖 Chapter 17

According to Chapter 17, the true purpose of human life (Purushartha) is to discard Preya (the pleasant) and honor Shreya (the good), much like a swan separates milk from water. A person must first understand where Shreya lies and then resist the obstacles that arise. The text identifies several major obstacles, including beginningless ignorance (Maya), which is a false imposition like a mirage. Other significant hurdles are the desires for seen and unseen enjoyments, hope, thirst, and cravings, which must be dug out by the roots. Lust and anger are also highlighted as tendencies that disrupt the attainment of knowledge.
