In their first encounter as described in Chapter 5, Chand Patil saw the Fakir, who was Sai Baba, sitting under a mango tree. His appearance was described as wearing a cap on his head and a kafni (a long robe) on his body. He was also carrying a short stick, known as a 'satka', under his arm. At that moment, he was preparing a chillum (a pipe) by crushing tobacco. It was from this humble scene that he called out to Chand Patil, setting in motion the events that would lead Baba back to Shirdi.
