Even before Maharaj of Shirdi was widely known, other holy men recognized his greatness. Chapter 0 recounts that Anandnath Maharaj of Akkalkot, a disciple of the famous Swami of Akkalkot, made profound remarks about him. When a group from Shirdi, including Madhavrao Deshpande, visited Anandnath Maharaj, he spontaneously decided to travel back to Shirdi with them. Upon arriving, he declared, "This is a diamond. You don't know its true value. Even if he is on a dunghill, he is a direct diamond; keep this in mind." This statement was made when the local villagers still considered Maharaj an ordinary or mad Fakir. Chapter 0 also notes that another holy man, Gangagir Baba, had "great affectionate conversations" with Maharaj, indicating that his spiritual stature was apparent to his peers.
