While known for his love, Sai Baba also displayed a very stern and uncompromising side to his devotees. Chapter 19 reveals this aspect through his own powerful words. He would say, 'Our caste is very harsh; we will try and tell you once or twice.' He was firm about his words being heeded, stating, 'he who does not heed our words—then even if it's our own son, we will cut him in two and throw him away!' This sternness was coupled with his omniscience; for example, he knew when someone was secretly practicing Hatha Yoga and would send pointed messages. This shows that Baba's guidance could be both loving and fiercely direct, demanding discipline for the devotee's own good.
Was Sai Baba always gentle, or did he also have a stricter side?
