According to the Shri Sai Satcharitra, Sai Baba's religious identity was intentionally ambiguous, as he transcended these labels. Chapter 7 explains that if he was called a Hindu, he looked like a Muslim (Yavana), and if called a Muslim, he had the noble marks of a Hindu. For instance, he lived in a mosque, a Muslim practice, yet kept a sacred fire (Dhuni) burning day and night, which is a Hindu custom. His ears were pierced like a Hindu, but he was also circumcised. The text concludes that his incarnation was holy and beyond both, making it impossible to definitively categorize him as one or the other.
Was Sai Baba a Hindu or a Muslim? The texts seem to present conflicting information.
