Was Sai Baba a Hindu or a Muslim, according to the Shri Sai Satcharitra?

📖 Chapter 7

According to Chapter 7 of the Shri Sai Satcharitra, Sai Baba's religious identity was deliberately ambiguous and he transcended such classifications. The text states, 'If called a Hindu, He looked like a Yavana (Muslim); if called a Yavana, He had the noble marks of a Hindu.' He lived in a mosque, yet maintained a sacred Hindu fire (Dhuni) and allowed bell ringing. He celebrated the Hindu festival of Ram Navami and also permitted the Muslim Sandal procession on the same night. The scripture concludes that 'He was neither Hindu nor Muslim—Sai’s incarnation was holy and beyond both,' treating all people with equal impartiality regardless of their faith.
