The story of Chand Patil is a central part of Baba's reappearance, as told in Chapter 5. Chand Patil was a fortunate Muslim man from the village of Dhup who experienced a great loss when his mare went missing. He searched for two months without any luck. Utterly disappointed, he was on his way back from Aurangabad, carrying the mare's saddle on his back, when he came across a Fakir under a mango tree. This Fakir, Sai Baba, called him over. Upon hearing that Patil's horse was lost, Baba simply told him to look by some nearby streams. Patil went and immediately found his mare, which made him realize he had encountered a great saint.
