During a Chavadi procession, Sai Baba developed a cough. As described in Chapter 28, a devotee named Laxmichand observed this and had a passing thought that the cough might be the result of someone's "evil eye" affecting Baba. The next morning, when Laxmichand was in the masjid, Baba spoke to Madhavrao and, in a seemingly self-reflective way, said, "Yesterday I had much coughing; is this the effect of an evil eye?
